You don't have to create an original world to Role Play in.
You can use a world that already exists such as Middle Earth, Hogwarts, Vampire: The Masquerade, or James Bond.
Anything can be used as an RP world.
Some tips when using an already established world are:
1. Decide what level of canon you are using.
If you are roleplaying at Hogwart's then decide up front if Harry Potter and Hermione are going to be characters, or if this is Hogwart's sometime in the future or the past. You may even decide that you are using the rules of the Harry Potter universe but your story takes place somewhere where none of the main characters or events from the books/movies are.
EXAMPLE: You make a world that uses the same rules as the True Blood world, but it occurs in France and has nothing to do with Sookie Stackhouse.
2. Be prepared to discuss the canon. Players will probably be drawn to your world because they are already interested in that world. Creating an RP that is set in Star Wars and uses actual characters from Star Wars could be a mine field for you as the creator. If you decide to make Yoda become a Sith Lord expect people to grief you over canon decisions.
3. Be up front with what characters you will allow. If you aren't going to let anyone be major characters or clones of major characters then be explicit with what types of characters you will allow.
